Cable vs DSL, I have the graph, cable is a waste of money

Filed under: Technology — aapriori @ 9:17 pm

Why is DSL so much more cost effective than DSL? The inherent
diminishing returns of broadband speed. When you doble the
speed, you halve the download time. Here are some completely
fake numbers just to demonstrate . If it takes 30 seconds to
download 1MB at 500Kbps, at 1Mbps it takes 15 seconds. At
2Mbps, 7.5seconds. 4Mbps 3.75 seconds. So you are doubling
larger and larger numbers, at the same time halving smaller and
smaller numbers. The gap gets really big really fast.

How fast? Here’s a graph showing the time saved at a few points
between 56Kbps (dial up) and 6.0Mbps (fast Cable). You see that
93.5% of the time saved on this scale is achieved at 768Kbps,
the $14.99 price point for DSL. So with a typical Cable price of
$40-$45/month (introductory pricing not factored) you are paying
up to 3 times as much for only a 6.5% gain in time savings.

dls vs cable time savings

Believe it or not this is the short version of my article.

Bush, ebay, others, actually read your correspondence

I am so damn sick and tired of politicians and companies not reading
the emails and letter and letters we take the time to compose and
send. How do I know they aren’t actually read? Because no matter
how carefully crafted the letter is to Bush or another politician stating
my absolute opposition to their position I get the form letter thanking
me for the support. No matter how detailed and precise my email is
to a company describing my technical problem I get a reply that the
problem was a temporary issue and is now resolved, even whent it
isn’t.

So what was the inspiration for this rant? Ebay. These jerks pawn off
the excuse of “some intermittent issues” due to “high traffic on
the site” with the date of whatever day you happened to have the
problem on . Come on ebay. Read your damn emails. Fix your damn
problems. And start acting like the good internet citizen your corporate
marketing has worked so hard to portray you as.

Microsoft stifles innovation, and they hate you

We all know that Microsoft has a long history of using marketing muscle to bury
or buy the little guy. But did you know Microsoft is actually stifling innovation
and limiting the potential of your computing experience? A prime example is
Internet Explorer. This browser has been behind the standards curve for over
5 years, and the new version doesn’t seem to show much promise of resolving
the situation. Instead they try to force proprietary technologies (active X) and
modified css implementations to position themselves as the better browser when
in fact we all know the only advantage they have is numbers.

As you might expect, this little rant was spurned by a specific problem caused by
the poor implementation of the IE browser. I want to do something fun and fancy
with Myspace, something I will be able to share with all Myspace users, but it won’t
work right now because IE doesn’t properly support the top property for a relatively
positioned div class (i.e. you don’t get to see my fun stuff because Microsoft doesn’t
like to support standards for your benefit). Safari supports it. Firefox supports it on
both platforms. But not Internet Explorer.

Screw you Bill G, and everything you stand for. If it weren’t for you we would have
computers that were as easy and reliable as televisions by now.

PS. I am starting a campaign to move Firefox to 50% by Jan. 1, 2007. This will help
the entire internet community because Microsoft will have to pay attention to you,
not their market. To help participate in the world wide Firefox day campaign (I have
no affiliation and do not benefit by your participation).

Tried to respond but

I tried to respond to this blog post but got a message that I must be logged in.

Here’s rant 1: If you ask us to respond, then set up your blog right!! I spent time to create a thoughtful post only to be blocked. Geeze.

Here’s the post, which is a rant in itself:

I don’t know how Bush, his administration, and congress can live with themselves calling estate taxes a “pocket book issue”. With the new inheritance tax passed at 1:41AM this morning, July 29, 2006 helping only those receiving more than $1,000,000 and providing a windfall of 30% to those receiving over $3,000,000 these people should drop to their knees and beg forgiveness for making such a statement.

Since the government feels they don’t need this money anyway why not pass a provision to allocate the taxes being returned to the ultra-rich to the national debt or alternate energy research instead?

Jerks.

Bush, congress, hate you

Filed under: Conservative Agenda,Economics,President Bush — aapriori @ 3:40 pm

If you are an average American citizen then Bush, his administration, and congress hate you. How do I know this? Everything they do is targeted at removing your rights or moving money from your pocket to the pockets of corporations and the ultra-rich. Here’s one example of your money moving provided courtesy of Marc Parent and the ever so popular, and oh so pitiful, Paris Hilton.

GOP Gives Paris Hilton $91M @ 2AM!

Just imagine the good done if instead of giving this money back to the ultra-rich they decided to specifically allocate the money this change in represents to say, pay the debt, or rebuild New Orleans, or fund alternative energy research.

Here’s a voting rights act for you

All voting rights currently afforded white, male, american citizens shall be extended
to all American citizens without qualification. All election material will be printed at
the very least in English, with the decision to print material in languages other than
English being left to the States.

I would prefer to see this as an amendment to the Constitution, but maybe we could
get a law passed without a time limitation.

Are you listening Bush? Congress? Anyone?

Cheers,

Bush, and congress, are disgusting

Yesterday congress passed a bill to extend, and Bush signed into law, the provisions
of the 1965 Voting Rights Act …

for 25 years. Here’s the Yahoo News story.

“In four decades since the Voting Rights Act was first passed, we’ve made progress
toward equality, yet the work for a more perfect union is never ending,” Bush said.

What a crock of shit. If we were making progress this would be an amendment to
the constitution, or at least a law of perpetuity.

“My administration will vigorously enforce the provisions of this law, and we will
defend it in court.” said Bush.

That’s an assumed position. What, you’re going to sign a bill you don’t intend to
enforce? Idiot. Plus, in the words of Ralph Neas, President of the People for the American
Way, “[Bush] owes it to all Americans that the Voting Rights Act is enforced. Unfortunately,
that is not the record of this administration — by a long shot.”

Finally, can you believe there were actually 33 members of the house that voted against it?

Man I’m pissed.

How about you?

Cheers,
